Teaching Trauma-Informed Yoga: Trauma, Yoga, and the Physiology of Resilience

  • yogaview 2211 North Elston Avenue illinois United States (map)

Healing from trauma is a nonlinear journey of the mind, body, and soul, and it can be deeply supported through the holistic practice of yoga. Given the pervasive levels of trauma within our society, many people who attend public classes carry the residue of past and ongoing harm within their shape and therefore may be more vulnerable to overwhelm on the mat. Understanding what a trauma survivor is managing internally when participating in a somatic practice like yoga will enhance your ability to create a more inclusive practice space. When taught with a trauma-informed lens, yoga can build a survivor’s embodied sense of safety while enhancing their comfort and capacity to listen inside. In this environment, trauma survivors have increased access to the healing power of yoga, which may ultimately become a trusted and lifelong resource for resilience.

This workshop is appropriate for a range of health and healing professionals who are interested in deepening their understanding around the somatics of trauma and creating a more trauma-informed practice - including, though not limited to: yoga teachers & serious students, bodyworkers, social workers, psychotherapists, birth workers, acupuncturists, physical therapists, medical doctors, and members of the anti-violence advocacy community.
