The Physiology of Resilience: Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher Training

Healing from trauma is a nonlinear journey of the mind, body, and soul which can be supported through the holistic practice of yoga. Given the pervasive levels of individual and systemic trauma in our society, as well as chronic stress, many who attend public classes carry the residue of past and ongoing harms within their shape. These invisible wounds can increase a person's vulnerability on the mat. Teaching yoga without consciousness as to how trauma shapes the brain and body can have unintended negative consequences on the student.

When taught with a trauma-informed lens, yoga can nourish a person’s embodied sense of safety, fortify personal sovereignty, and bolster their capacity to recognize their body as an ally. In this environment, trauma survivors have expanded access to the power of yoga which may grow into a lifelong resource for healing, resilience building, and reclaiming joy and ease. It is often true that more intentionally studying the ways in which yoga supports trauma healing enhances the teachers' appreciation for the gifts that yoga has brought into their own life. Nurturing this appreciation for our own personal practice is the foundation to how we share it with others.

Understanding what a trauma survivor may be managing internally when engaging in the somatic practice of yoga will enhance your ability to create a more inclusive space that offers a variety of ways of entering and engaging with breathing, movement, stillness, and meditation. This knowledge transcends the yoga space alone and offers a resource, a lens and a sense of humility that can assist us in relating to our surrounding community and world.
